Madeleine Hyland (SGCNZ NSSP 2000, SGCNZ YSC 2001)
Madeleine Hyland won the Sam Wanamaker Award for Most Promising Actor, as well as the Ida Gaskin Award for General Excellence and the NZADIE award for Imagination and Commitment to Text at the SGCNZ Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival in Schools (now SGCNZ UOSWSF), before travelling to the Globe with the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company in 2001, where she also completed an internship. After training at Unitec, she formed Peripeteia in Auckland, who won critical acclaim for their award-winning productions of The Tempest, Three Sisters and Cymbeline, in non-traditional, shared light performance spaces.
She moved to London in 2008, and since then has worked in Globe Education as a workshop leader, director and assistant director, as well as continuing to direct her own independent productions. She has to date acted in sixteen of Shakespeare’s plays, (many with The Factory, of whom she is a core member), across England, Scotland, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, and New York. She has also spent two years with the RSC, acting on the West End and Broadway in Wolf Hall/Bring Up the Bodies, and toured the world as a lead guest vocalist singing with Dexys (Midnight Runners). She has just released her album Love Run with her own band, the ‘rapscallion gypsy orchestra’ The Amazing Devil.
