Auckland Shakespeare Company’s YASC for Teens is for young actors with or without prior experience in performing Shakespeare. Tutor Stuart Devenie of YASC, will direct you through selected scenes and monologues towards a studio performance at the end of the term. In class Stuart will focus on demystifying Shakespeare and making it accessible, fresh and fun. The class will be structured around text analysis, character development, performance technique, and building the world of the story through performance, Stuart’s objective for this class is for all students to have fun, feel empowered and achieve new performance goals through the brilliance of Shakespeare!

This term:  “Scenes and Sonnets”

We will be exploring solo presentation with a sonnet of the student’s choice as well as two-hander scenes and group scenes from selected comedies and tragedies. Over the course we will examine the shifting relationship between the performers and the audience in the scripts (the performance grid); the difference between role and character and how this affects the performance; how to manage and present the verse in the scripts. These elements will be drawn together in a short presentation for friends, family and caregivers in the final class. The main feature of the classes will be fun! Something the tutor is a great believer in.
